I have heard stories of co-ops that have totally depleted their reserve fund - so they could not only not afford necessary repairs - but the units become unsalable (banks look very carefully at reserve funds and don t want to give mortgages on properties when the underlying funding is unsound.) Our was about $500 per month (smaller apartments paid less) - and we preferred to do this - so we could leave the base maintenance as is - to make sure apartments are as salable as possible. When we put a new roof on recently we did it via a 12-month assessment. (I live in a co=op with 48 apartments and out reserve fund is never allowed to go under $500K - since if we suddenly need a new elevator or heating system - this can be a major expense. For $60 its far from "incredibly expensive.When buying any jointly owned property (condo or co-op) it is vital to understand the underlying financing and overall status:Ģ) Have necessary repaiss and upkeep been done on schedule?ģ) How much of a reserve fund is there at the moment and what is a safe amount? I use it daily, its very well done software, has a great UI, and is available on the two devices I use most of the time with excellent interfaces geared toward each one. People find value in all sorts of different products. I'm just saying its something I find great value in. Listen, I'm not saying everyone should use this software.

If it cost $5 a year i would be hesitant. Ultimately I think when people see subscription it breaks their brains. Not to mention the passionate defending of grey market licenses because people want to rationalize beating "the man".

People whine about paying for a Microsoft windows license that costs about $100 once every 5-10 years (or however long people keep their computer) yet this is equivalent to one copy every single year. I see the appeal of this software, but frankly its incredibly expensive. Of course, and they own multiple Beige Corollas.

The point here is to simple read up on free resources that are there to learn how to budget and not spending 100s of $ on a platform, which again could be beneficial but same could be achieved by a simple excel spread sheet. OH and go read a book, you might learn something a little more advanced than money in, money out. But with the right knowledge and the right tools, your going to build something a lot more solid that will last you a long time and won't come back to bite you in the ass in the future. You can build a house with basic knowledge, a hammer and some nails.
The idea that a budget is just money in money out is way to simplistic. Is it a necessity? No, but it can help anyone track their expenses and plan for the future. So explain to me why people can't get their information from books instead of your dad? YNAB is a great tool to help you budget. You also say you don't need a book but you got your instructions from your dad and someone else. You do realize that the envelope system is a budgeting system right? So your dad was an idiot because he used a tool to help him budget? BTW ynab is highly based on the envelope system.
